Running with the Trials Competitors

Run I
Time: 47:57
Distance: 10.67 km
Pace: 4:30/km
Map

Run II
Time: 29:46
Distance: 6.61km
Pace: 4:30/km
Map

Meagan and I jogged over to the Hilton to meet up with Caitlin, and Allison Mascas and Scott MacPherson of Team Rogue Elite. The group of us jogged out to the Allen Parkway where there are no lights to cross. Lots of participants were out getting in their last runs before toeing the line tomorrow. Deena Kastor even said "good morning" as we crossed a street close to the hotel.

The hotel lobby is buzzing with activity and everyone looks fit. Both the men and women competing look smaller in person than in video interviews or pictures. Most of the participants I know are just happy to be in attendance and don't have any aspirations to actually be in the top 3. However, all wish to have a great race and take as many scalps as possible. On my second run with Jesse Armijo and Joe Moore, they both talked about picking up the carnage late in the race if they just ran a consistent pace of 5:15 to 5:20. I'm rooting for the little guys, the guys who are just happy to be in the race, the ones who hit late qualifying times at CIM or small marathons on the Gulf. They have no shot at being top 10 and little shot at being top 25, but it will be fun to watch guys like Joe and Jesse.

The rest of the day was spent hanging around the hotel and making sure Meagan had everything she needed. One interesting story that is relevant to the USATF uniform rules involves Craft. Meagan took her jersey to the uniform check-in and had no issues. On the other hand, Joe took his uniform to the check-in and came down to lunch with duct tape over the "Craft" portion of the logo but not the six dots.

After our meal, I went up to the uniform committee and simply explained that I had two athletes competing, both with the same logo and one has duct tape on, the other doesn't. I showed them my jacket and continued asking questions in the politest way possible. Craft didn't appear on the list of pre-approved brands, but  I eventually got to speak with someone who knew the rules. Turns out, they didn't know Craft was the actual apparel manufacturer and not some other sponsor which means the logo is permitted to be visible. I immediately told Joe to peel off the tape and that he would be good to rock the Elite Jersey. Problem averted!

I avoided the technical meeting and instead chatted with Pat Price of Writing About Running concerning some Karhu articles we would like him to explore. I met up with Meagan's parents and chilled in their hotel room before dinner. I ate dinner and enjoyed the very same meal I had for lunch (the steak was much better this time). I chatted with many friends running the race and wished them all best of luck. Tomorrow is going to be bad ass!

Providence Long Run

Time: 139:45
Distance: 31.17k
Pace: 4:29
Map

Yesterday evening Meagan, Caitlin and I drove down to Providence for a get together at Kim Smith's house. It was in celebration of her recent engagement to Pat Tarpy and her 30th birthday. Happy days! There was a good crew in attendance which included former Brown captain Matt Emond and his wife Danielle, Pat Moulton, Molly Huddle, Roisin McGettigan, Jon (Andru)chow, and the legendary Keith Kelly.

It was a great evening of eating food filled with gluten, drinking pints and chatting with friends old and new. I stayed up way too late and didn't get to bed until around 2 AM when things wound down. As you can imagine, starting off in the morning was going to be slow and fortunately we had Kim to lead the way for the first 40 minutes. She is still in the regeneration phase since racing at New York and isn't putting in too much time on the feet.

We looped around the neighborhoods near Providence College which aren't anything to write home about. In fact, they are the same neighborhood where Jeff Gaudette and I were called out by guy yelling, "Man, look at 'dis. Ni**as be runnin' in daisy dukes!" Awesome. There was no yelling today even when we headed back out for much more distance as a group of three.

I took Meagan and Caitlin over to the nicer side of town and up onto College Hill. I showed them the Brown Stadium, the Blackstone Blvd., Brown's athletic fields behind the OMAC, Thayer Street, campus, Rhode Runner, downtown Providence, and the state capitol. I don't think there is anything else to see in all of Rhode Island that wasn't shared on the run.

I never felt great as my stomach was giving me issues. It could have been the gluten (probably not), the 15 beers (not literally), late night dessert, lack of sleep or the combination of all four. I had to stop multiple times as a result, but that just gave the girls an excuse to stop from the blistering pace I was laying down. I glad to have this run wrapped up as it's the longest run in quite some time.

Windy Saturday Morning in Marblehead

Time: 72:44
Distance: 16.19k
Pace: 4:30
Map

Meagan, Caitlin and I headed out the door after a relaxing morning enjoying the sun as we overlooked the water. We could tell it was going to be windy based on the whitecaps and it was as we headed out the door shortly after 10 AM. We headed out on West Shore and then linked up to the trail to head out toward Salem. The loop brought us back into town and out to Swampscott (lovely town, ugly name).

I wish I knew the neighborhoods and side roads a little better because we had to stick to some of the busier streets. The wind was obnoxious for the first half of the run until we found the beach that took us back to the town line between Marblehead and Swampscott just down the street from the Karhu CEO's house. We hopped back on the trail and headed straight back to the fort for some stretching and strengthening.

Marblehead Tempo with Cait Chris

Time: 93:28
Distance: 22.21

W/u: 26:57 for 5.52k
W/o: 13k+ playing queenmaker
C/d: 15:20 for 3.22k

Last night I picked up Red from Logan and we made our way back to Fort Sewall (apparently I've been spelling it "Sewell" which is incorrect according to the signs on the fort, but correct according to Google Maps. The debate goes on). Caitlin is going to be hanging out with us this weekend and checking out our new haunts and jaunts. It would be just like old times as this morning's workout would involve me setting the pace for 8+ miles around the Marblehead neck. This would be Caitlin's first workout back after two weeks of light running which fit perfectly into Meagan's week of training.

The route would have us start from the corner of Atlantic and Beach near a house that we almost rented before deciding on the fort. We would run across the causeway, loop the neck thrice and then run back to the almost rented house. I wasn't sure on the distance, but it would be close to being appropriate.

Splits:
3:43.8, 3:45.4, 3:54.7, 3:44.3, 3:50.5, 3:49.8, 3:50.3, 3:55.6, 3:51.7, 3:39.3, 3:42.6, 3:46.5, 3:50.8, 1:46.3 (.47k @ 3:45 pace) for 51:11 and 13.47k total, and a 3:48/k average.

I had hoped to start the workout a little more controlled but a strong wind at our backs got the pace rolling early. There was an early moment of alarm when some guys must have been emptying a septic tank and the air smelled of shit. Not "smelled like shit" in this is a bad smell, but, literally, like shit. Our breathing soon welcomed a fishy seaweed smell a few hundred meters later and was overly enjoyed. The second kilometer was hit just before the most significant hill that we would run three times. Caitlin and Meagan trailed closely behind as I attempted to block the wind with my large frame. We finished the first loop of the neck which brought us close to 5k.

During the second tour of some of Marblehead's largest homes, Meagan and I found ourselves pulling slightly away from Caitlin. I could tell that Meagan was going to have a great run while Caitlin was going to struggle a bit on the uphills as her iron levels haven't returned to normal. I dropped back and let Meagan press on while coaxing Red to keep up an honest pace. She ran really tough from 7k to 9k willing herself to stay on pace. We started the third loop together about 30 meters behind Meagan as I wanted to get Cait to the top of the hill. Once I felt she was going to be able to finish up strong, I raced ahead to set the pace for Meagan (see 3:39 split).

With a little more than a neck loop to run plus the finishing straight out the causeway, I wanted to see what Meagan could run. We upped the effort level and she clicked off some nice final splits and even told me to speed up as we pressed into a strong headwind. I was already running pretty hard when she said, "I can run faster." The 3:50 split was probably the toughest of the day and worth much more. She finished out the final street with some lift and ended just over 51 minutes, similar to a few weeks ago when she ran near the Ipswich bike path. I would say that this workout was better considering the rolling terrain, wind and slightly longer workout. Moving in the right direction, just have to stay healthy..

Final Run in Charlotte

Time: 76:25
Distance: 16.17k
Pace: 4:44
Map

Meagan and I met up with an early morning crew for our last official run in Charlotte. I never felt great, but tried to enjoy being on familiar streets for many weeks or months to come. We wandered through Freedom Park, around the Dilworth neighborhood and ventured into Myers Park toward the end.

Back at the house it was a mad push to finish packing the rest of our belongings. The trailer was well organized until the final 5 minutes when I just started throwing small objects and let them land wherever. I shut the door, made sure it was secure, locked it, and hoped for the best. An eight hour drive was ahead, one nervous cat, and all of our possessions were off to MA.

Post Party Uptown Run

Time: 80:36
Distance: 17.47k
Pace: 4:37
Map

This morning a slightly hungover group of CRC runners showed up to the Dowd YMCA to get in a run. The big surprise of the morning had to be Matt Jaskot as he rallied hard from what must have been a rough late night. Meagan and I had our costume/going away party graciously hosted by Rebecca Thomason. Matt came fully in character as Raoul Duke of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Make note to never take Mr. Duke's Wild Turkey or be harassed. It was a great night with many of the close friends Meagan and I have made during our two short years in Charlotte.

Back to the run that brought a small group out to run around Uptown and some of the nearby bike paths. I wasn't feeling great and many of the under-crossings were flooded which made for a slippery stride. I was content to call the run at 80 minutes and get back to packing.

Three Ladies' Workout

Time: 86:48
Distance: 18.76k

W/u: 26:31 for 5.37k
W/o: 3 mile tempo, 3 x 400m
C/d: 29:04 for 5.87k

Meagan and Caitlin were joined by Pezz and I for a workout consisting of a 3 mile tempo followed by some quick 400s. I was just tagging along to get in a run this morning and opted to jump in. Since the Army 10 Miler is later this week, the workout was on Caitlin's schedule to get her ready to race at sub-6:00 pace.

Splits:
3:48, 3:38, 3:35, 3:37, 2:47 (761 meters at 3:40 pace),
(5:10 rest)
73.86 (2:24), 72.47 (2:30), 69.21
31:13 total for 7.52k

The first 1k was much too slow as the girls felt like talking about boys, makeup and Sarah's ugly dress. Instead of waiting for the mile marker for all of them to realize they were on pace to run 6:10 (looking for 5:55-6:00), I hit the front and dropped the pace. The talking immediately stopped and the breathing started. I probably kept the pace too hot for the remainder of the workout as we were all much under the intended pace. Oh well.

The 400s were short and easy. It was probably the first time that I've done any sort of speedwork or stride in many weeks. I felt a little awkward at times, but luckily the first 300m are downhill.

End of the Week

Time: 74:41
Distance: 17.35k
Pace: 4:18
Map

I left the house this evening with the plan of getting in some time before meeting the Charlotte Running Club 6 pm crew at Freedom Park. It was fun catching up with Caitlin, Billy and some others before wrapping up the week training.

My foot wasn't feeling too bad this evening as the taping and compression sleeve seem to help.

Early Morning to Caitlin's

Time: 40:32
Distance: 8.54k
Pace: 4:44

It was an early morning out the door to meet Caitlin along the bike path. She had a flight out to somewhere and I was playing chauffeur. I didn't feel great for obvious early morning reasons but I also didn't feel terrible considering yesterday's track workout.

Davidson College Long Run

Time: 128:26
Distance: 30.01k
Pace: 4:16

Somehow I've been motivated to make early morning runs with people this week and today was no different. I was up and out the door before 6:30 am to meet up with a group running from Davidson College. I mixed a cooler of Nuun and lugged it down to my car so that everyone in attendance would have something to enjoy.

I started out at the back of the pack and reeled the large group of 20 in by about 4k. I was going to be out on the trails and roads awhile today and I needed to make sure that I wasn't cooked by 10k. We made a few loops on the cross country course before returning to the parking lot along the road around an hour. I was feeling good and felt like the pace was startling to settle so I hit the front and quickened the pace a bit. My right foot is still giving me some troubles but the discomfort generally goes away.

After snagging some Nuun at the hour mark, it was back out to the roads for some faster running. I was trying to run down Caitlin and one of the Mayes brothers, but their pace was quicker than the 6:40 that I was told. I ended up running back into the center of town as the couple turned off to finish (they started at 6:30 am) and I ran into Cornelius. I had never before been to the town so it was cool to visit on foot. I was not feeling fantastic by the 20k mark and was just trying to break the run down into smaller segments.

I was back at the college parking lot at 22k where I snagged some more Nuun and headed out for a final 8k of running. I was feeling good, but not great. The heat and humidity was getting to me, but there were no signs of dizziness of major dehydration. With about 6k to run I stopped to pee and was pretty sure I saw blood in my urine. Not good. Really not good.

I continued on and ran another 3k before I had to pee again. More blood. Not good, but I was still unconcerned as I had taken an ibuprofen and been out on the roads for close to 2 hours thus far. There weren't any signs of heat exhaustion so I chugged along finishing with some decent kilometers the last 15 minutes. This was the first time I had experienced something like this, but know it has happened to other runners.

Overall, it was a good run minus the period of me experiencing my period. I was thankful to jump in the Hovis' lake house pool afterward to cool off and continue to hydrate with some electrolyte tablets.

Double in Uptown

Time: 34:26
Distance: 7.19k
Pace: 4:47

Earlier today I had treatment from Dr. Evan Kahn of Greenapple Sports and Wellness. I've been needing and meaning to get in there to have someone look at my peroneal tendon. It has been giving a little discomfort on runs the past few days during toe off and especially running uphill. It was just my luck when an hour before I was planned to visit Dr. Kahn that a huge storm rolled through Charlotte and knocked the power out of my house and their office. This meant I wouldn't have access to all of their fun treatment toys like the laser. This is very much a first world problem when the power goes out and I don't get my tendons lasered. Oh well.

I did work from Caitlin's house for part of the day and we ended up heading out for a run with Aaron. It was good catching up with everyone and getting to run around Uptown. The creeks had flooded and Frazier Park was unrecognizable.

Early Start

Time: 74:23
Distance: 15.85k
Pace: 4:41

I woke up wicked early this morning in order to see Meagan off to the Speed Loop where she was meeting Caitlin and some others. From the outset of the run I watched Meagan struggle to keep a fluid stride. Her shin has been bugging her some and I could tell it was worse than she had described it. I kept hearing her scrape her right foot every 20 seconds which is not normal. We got to the Speed Loop and I was just jogging around watching some of the workout when I could see Meagan falling off the back on the second workout. Not good.

She called it a day and we jogged back through Freedom Park to the Booty Loop to get in some additional distance. It was not a good way to start the day at the Kinley/Nedlo household especially since it required a 5:30 am departure from the house.

Beat the Heat 5k Watching

Time: 56:48
Distance: 12.05k

Pre-5k: 35:58 for 8.01k
Post 5k: 20:50 for 4.04k

Meagan and I traveled to Winston-Salem a few hours early to hang out at Fleet Feet Winston-Salem. They are a top account of mine and they also carry Craft apparel. We were both able to chat with staff and be around customers most of the afternoon. Once we left the store we headed over to the start of the race to pick up Meagan's packet and t-shirt. It was an awful neon green Hanes number that Michael Jordan wouldn't wear. We had about an hour to kill before she started her warm up so we looked for friends as they started to arrive including: Heather Magill, Caitlin, Thomas, Matt, John, Bobby Mack, Ryan Woods, Joe Moore, Devin Swann and others.

I started the warm up with Ryan Woods and Scott who is originally from Charlotte. We ran the back half of the course as preview and then found some extra miles. They were done after about 15 minutes so I continued on by myself around the parking lot until I got to 8k. It was great weather considering the time of year and the course was an honest one.

During the actual race I got to see the leaders and lead women three or four times. Meagan didn't have the best of races, Caitlin ran strong and Bobby killed it. He set a course record by a couple of seconds to finish in 14:15. He certainly should go after Scott Dvorak's state record of 14:08 soon.

After the race I jogged around with Bobby, Scott, Ryan, Devin and Joe. It was fun hearing about the race, but I wish I could have been out there. It will happen soon once I'm in a little better shape so I don't get my doors blown off by a field like tonight.

Running With Red

Time: 68:55
Distance: 15.35k
Pace: 4:29

I ran with Caitlin this morning at an hour that I would rather being sitting at my desk drinking coffee and doing work. We linked up in Freedom Park and continued on the Booty Loop where it looks like they are still doing construction on parts of the Queens Road West. Hopefully they will be finished in time for 24 Hours of Booty which comes up in a few weeks. I think this was similar to last year when they put in bike lanes on Selwyn right around the weekend of the event.

This leads me to ask, is it just me or does Myers Park/Booty Loop living residents get preferential treatment when it comes to city construction projects? It seems that any time a tree falls, a road develops a crack, a sewer line bursts, etc., the city crews are out there to fix it in a matter of days if not hours. The roads are always perfect and maybe they should be since I'm sure you pay out the ass in taxes to live in that neighborhood. However, there are certainly parts of Charlotte that are constantly overlooked when it comes to maintaining roads (i.e. Independence Blvd, Wilkinson).

I felt decent on this morning's run, but the weather isn't much better than yesterday, if at all. I am taking my 15k and hydrating the rest of the day.

Accidental Monday Long Run

Time: 87:32
Distance: 19.04k
Pace: 4:35

I wasn't sure how far I wanted to run this morning when I set out the door with Meagan to meet Caitlin, but I didn't have 19k in mind (21k is 13.1 miles). On our way to Freedom Park we ran into a fit looking Michelle and Carolyn along the Sugar Creek Greenway. The four of us heading into the park and met up with Red while looking for our guest Julia Lucas (wife of Ian Dobson, Olympian and former Stanford standout). She is in town visiting her family and had contacted Caitlin looking for running partners.

We ran around the Booty Loop as a group while Caitlin and Julia talked about their "boring stories of glory days" competing for Wake Forest and NC State. The pace was comfortable and my leg was feeling quite good so I continued to tag along as the sole male. Eventually Michelle and Carolyn dropped off and then Caitlin peeled off for home. Meagan, Julia and I ran over near Rebecca Thomason's house before making a beeline for home. I was putting in more k's than my official Sunday long run which wasn't intentional, but just going to happen.

Caitlin's 3 x 3 Mile Workout

Time: 105:31
Distance: ~14.5 miles

W/u: 20:28 for ~2.5 miles
W/o: Help Caitlin with 3 x 3 miles w/ 4 mins rest
C/d: 22:53 for ~2.5 miles

I was up early to help Caitlin out with her 3 x 3 mile workout around the Booty Loop. I slowly ran over to the tennis courts in Freedom Park trying to get my legs wake up. I knew what the workout was but I wasn't sure of the pace or rest.

Once we got started I knew the pace was quick but since I wasn't wearing a Garmin I didn't know how fast the uphill mile would be. Turns out we came through in just over 5:50 when we were hoping for something more like 6:10. From that point forward, the workout was on and it was nice to see Caitlin respond each segment. She struggled during parts, especially the second mile, but was tough to keep clipping away. I'm not a big fan of working out on the Booty Loop but the route is definitely good at keeping the pace honest.

Splits:
17:36 - 5:52, 5:56, 5:45
(3:58)
17:41 - 5:51, 6:00, 5:47
(5:03)
17:47 - 5:59, 6:00, 5:42
Total of 62:10 and ~9.5 miles

It should also be noted that I hurdled a dog on the final 3 mile interval. Had this been my workout and not Caitlin's I would have probably tripped over the pup and taken the old woman out too.

Recovery Miles

Time: 75:31
Distance: ~10 miles

I met up with Caitlin this morning for a run at McAlpine. It was good to see Mike Kahn back from his race in Boston and find Will out on the trails after about 30 minutes of running. My legs were a little stiff at the start of the run but I was able to ease into the run nicely. I'm glad my legs weren't too beat up from the workout yesterday and that training has basically returned to normal.

Boston Marathon Watching

Time: 61:12
Distance: ~8 miles

Meagan and I drove over to Caitlin's house this morning for a Boston Marathon viewing party. We first had to get in about an hour of running along the other side of the Sugar Creek Greenway. It's the same path that starts by my house and the city is in the process of linking the two sections. It eventually let us out near the 18 mile mark of the marathon course which we elected to run the rest of. I got to relive the Thunder Road glory and have smog induced coughs along The Plaza.

We got back to the house and I did a few strides in the parking lot. My legs are definitely tired from the 90+ I ran last week. I made sure to stretch and use the Muscletrac while we waited for the marathon coverage to begin. I didn't know what to expect from the race but I knew the conditions were right for the athletes to have brilliant runs. And, they definitely put on a show. I won't elaborate on the individual performances of Kim Smith, Desi Davila, Ryan Hall or Geoffrey Mutai. They each showed great determination throughout the race and it was too bad Kim's calf didn't hold up (turns out she tore her soleus).

I was most interested in watching the form of the various athletes in the lead packs. Desi looked amazing in comparison to the two Kenyan women she battled with the final 5k of the race. She was smooth and rhythmic while they flailed about. Ryan Hall almost looks like he is overstriding with his long loping legs. Then there was Geoffrey Mutui who looked like the man to beat from the 5k marker. I don't think I've ever seen him run before and he has an incredibly fluid motion. Over the years I've come to admire several runners' strides and I definitely have to put Mutai in my top three along with:

Former 800m WR holder Wilson Kipketer. Silky smooth.

Former Kenyan, now American Bernard Lagat.

Geoffrey Mutai recording fastest ever marathon in 2:03:02 followed closely by Moses Mosop in 2:03:06 (coached by Canova).

Sunday McAlpine Run

Time: 96:08
Distance: 14 miles

Meagan, Caitlin, Charlie and I all started from Old Bell on a long run at McAlpine. We first ventured up to Boyce and then to the extension across the bridge at the 2.5 mile mark. Meagan turned around at 4 miles and Charlie dropped back as Caitlin started to pick up the pace. I think we were hitting sub-7's by the fifth mile and gradually picked it up from there. Caitlin was supposed to get in some uptempo miles in preparation for the US 25k Championships in May. I didn't feel great as my legs are tired from this week's mileage. My legs aren't that beat up from the race, but definitely fatigued from the second week of 75+.

Medium Long Run

Time: 80:57
Distance: ~12 miles

Meagan and I met up with Caitlin, Eric and Justin at Rebecca's house after their workout. We started their cool down nice and easy and continued on to the bike path that runs past the hospital. Meagan turned around at 40 minutes but I was feeling good and ran back into Uptown with Caitlin. I felt good all the way back the house and was surprised to log over 80 minutes this morning when I originally set out to run about 8-9 miles.
