Time: 57:34
Distance: ~8 miles
This evening, after visiting Raleigh Running Outfitters, TAF Raleigh, TrySports Raleigh, Fleet Feet Raleigh, Bull City Running Co., Inside-Out Sports and Raleigh Running Outfitters in Cary, it was time to go on run number two. We weren't too far from Umstead State Park which is always a great place to run. Again it was Meagan's first time to run here and I ran with her for 3 miles on the way out. She turned and returned back to the parking lot while I continued on for another mile (30:00 on the watch).
I flipped back and upped the tempo just a touch to get back prior to 6:00 pm. There were signs posted everywhere you looked saying the gates are locked at that time. I returned with about 10 minutes to spare. I cleaned up best I could before taking off in the direction of our hotel.
My achilles was alright, but I can tell it's still a little off. The hilly terrain were probably not the best for it on today's morning and evening runs.

Umstead State Park
Time: 90:37
Distance: 12.31 miles
Pace: 7:20
Map
Last night Mike and I hung out on Duke's campus with some B-school kids. We ended up having a great time and I think Fuqua's status might have inched up a few points in Mike's book. Perhaps I will have a place to crash next fall when I travel to the Raleigh/Durham area.
We attended an auction that was raising money for the Special Olympics. First item on the ballot were tickets to an after party with the Black Eyed Peas. The winning bidder paid $800 for a limo ride, back stage passes with the dean and his wife and some other perks. Other items on the night included a signed Coach K basketball that went for $400, Kiawah resort rooms and a week in the British Virgin Islands. I was a little surprised to see grad students toss around $1500 bids for such items, but I guess that's how they roll at Fuqua. One guy that could afford to bid on such items and didn't was Pat Garrity who played 10 seasons in the NBA. That dude was huge.
We hit a restaurant and a few bars before calling it a night. In the morning Mike realized that he couldn't find his i.d. I remember him showing the bouncer at 12:30 the night before, but apparently it never made it back into his pocket. Somehow DeCoste managed to get his ass on the 7:20 flight back to Boston. And you wonder how KSM can get jihadists on flights.
After dropping Mike at the airport I headed to the Reedy Creek entrance at Umstead State Park. I had time to get in some extra zzz before the 8 am start of the run. I was meeting Joe Lust and Kevin Taylor for some miles through the park. Joe is the guy who I ran with one time a few months ago and Kevin is a former athlete of Steve Spence's at Shippenburg State.
I felt decent on the run, not great though. A couple of times we ran across Jim Micheels, owner of Raleigh Running Outfitters, putting in work. My achilles held up, but I could tell that the lack of sleep the last two night was catching up with me. The worst part of the body were my quads. I think the hills from Buehler's trail really thrashed them. It will be important for me to get some proper rest this weekend.

Back at Umstead
Time: 60:08
Distance: 9.01 miles
Pace: 6:40
Map
I found some time this afternoon to slip off and go for a run at Umstead State Park. I ran here once before with a few guys I happened to run into. That day it was cold and rainy. Today it was cold and rainy. I didn't realize rain was in the forecast so I didn't bring a jacket. Luckily, I had gloves which increased my comfort level a bit. My legs felt good and I definitely needed the soft surface found in the park. The dirt path was in relatively good shape despite the recent snow and rainfall. If I lived in Raleigh/Durham, I could see myself training in Umstead daily. There would be a lot of out and back running but the rolling terrain is pretty ideal.

Reedy Creek at Umstead State Park
Time: 112:54
Distance: 16.62 miles
Pace: 6:46
Map
Last night I stayed at the luxurious Motel 6. Just because I have a job doesn't mean that I've made it. I noticed on my drive to Tom Bodet's best that Umstead State Park wasn't too far away. I decided in the morning to run in the park before visiting more stores.
I found the Reedy Creek lot without a problem and noticed there were already have a dozen cars already parked. I asked a group of women about a loop that I could run and they suggested the Mills something loop. I took their advice but found the trail to be filled of roots, rocks and damp leaves. It was a cold and drizzly morning which was not conducive to running fast on a sinuous trail. At about 20 minutes into the run I came across a main road and decided to turn right. I was headed in the direction of the parking lot and not too far away from my car when I spotted three guys clipping along. I was going to have to find another 40 minutes of running and was thankful that some decent runners were out and about.
I introduced myself and we got to talking about running, North Carolina, collegiate athletics, Umstead Park and more. Turns out that Liam Revel ran at Boston University during my time at Brown. He was a 3:50 1500 meter runner and still logs close to 100 miles a week. We had a good laugh about Jochen Dieckfoss, a German, who also ran at Boston University and was a stud cross-country runner and steeple-chaser.
Joe attended the University of Rochester in New York and is currently studying at Duke. He was a 5k/10k guy in college. Next year Joe will start work at Deutchebank so I assume that he is getting his MBA. I'm embarrassed to admit that I can't recall the third guy's name, but I never really heard it when we made introductions. He was very quiet throughout the run.
The trio was putting in 10 miles on the day and I had already logged nearly five when I joined them. They ended up running closer to 12 which means I nearly hit 17 miles. I was definitely fatigued by the end of the run, but was pleased at how I handled the hilly terrain. I probably would have struggled to find another five miles if I were to go it alone. Funny when five miles would have been tough and an extra 12 doesn't seem so bad.
