After a fun night out in Enid, America with the wedding crew, it was time to run. Meagan, Kristi and I went over to the Holiday Inn Express to meet Jilane, Aja and Scotty. Once the crew was assembled we mobilized up and out to the dirt roads. If you normally don't check out the map, do so today. I have gone away from running out and back and was suprised to see how straight the road we were on actually was from the sky. The dirt road was a sweet training surface and slightly rolling.
My head throbbed for the first 10 minutes upon impact with the ground but I felt good from 3 to 10 miles. At about 70 minutes the throbbing returned and I was ready to be done with the run by 12 miles. During our time out there Scotty and I saw a catfish pond under a small bridge, a friendly black lab, two horses, a lizard and a couple of small snakes. Our run was nothing in comparison to the girls' run.

Meagan's Pickard St. Miles
Time: 61:19
Distance: 8.90 miles
W/u: 17:36 for 2.22 miles
W/o: 4 x mile (Pickard St.)
C/d: 12:43 for 1.68 miles
Splits:
6:10 (2:03), 6:14 (2:04), 6:13 (1:59), 6:10
Meagan and I met up with Kristi along Jenkins this morning for a light workout. She planned on doing something like 4 or 5 by mile running up and down on Pickard St. I decided join the party and be the pacemaker (not the kind you put in the heart). Since I really just need to catch up on some posting I'll refer to Meagan's blog about this workout as I'm still running relatively easy to let the body recover from the half-marathon.

The Red Dirt of Draper
Time: 90:12
Distance: 14.02 miles
Pace: 6:26
Map
Scotty, Meagan and I drove out Sooner Road and met Kristi and Coleman at the parking lot to Lake Draper. I missed the trail out at Draper and remember it being one of the better training spots around Norman. It just takes a little long to get out there. One of my first runs in the OK state was at Draper with Steve Muchetti.
Coleman ran with Scotty and I for the first 3.5 miles and then he stopped to walk back. Our run continued to the end of the dirt and on to half way across the dam. Scotty had never been out to the trail before and was mightitly impressed with the soft stuff and how it ran.
We returned to the parking lot just as Coleman was getting back and he told us about a convo he had with a older gentleman who was enjoying his Memorial Weekend.
Old Guy: Son you look hot (temp.).
Coleman: Yea, I'm ok.
OG: Looks like you could use a beer. (Pats the bag of sno-cones next to him). They are nice and cold.
Coleman: Thanks, but I'm ok.
That was the biggest mistake of the morning, not taking free cold beers on a walk back to the parking lot.

Stretch Session
I went to the gym this evening and spent about 5 mins on the elliptical while Kristi was working out. I got bored and decided to hit up the fitness room for some solid stretching. My hips are relatively tight but that's always the case. By the end of the session I was feeling much more relaxed and my calves are noticeably less stiff.
I normally wouldn't post about a simple stretch session but I have to report that the new uniforms are in and they'll look pretty sharp at the front of the pack. I should post a picture but that would ruin the suspense for their debut on Sunday morning at 6:30 (that's half 6 if you're a knacker). That's right a start time of 6:30 am! Who does that? Oh, and for all of you running over 6 hours, you're in luck because there is a 4:30 am start time for the slow pokes.
Sorry slow pokes, have fun getting up before 4:00.

Slow & Steady
Time: 54:44
Distance: 7.08 miles
Pace: 7:44
Splits: 8:15, 8:00, 7:47, 7:43, 736, 7:27, 7:20
Map & Data
I got a text this morning on my way to work from Kristi who was going to be getting off early which meant she wanted to run around 7 pm. I needed an extra run or two to let my hammy recover and thought running with Kristi would provide a good easy slog. We left her place and I found us an easy 7 miles around the dark streets of Norman. School started today which means there is a lot more traffic out there. Luckily, I was prepared with my headlamp and reflective vest. That second part is a lie, it will be a few more years before I start truly geeking out with Nightlife garbage.
I wore a compression sleeve on my right calf and right hamstring in hopes of keeping things loose. I looked a bit ridiculous, but if it keeps me running I'll do it. The pace was slow so it took a few miles before the body started feeling comfortable. It was a great night to be out running in Norman, glad I was a part of it.

Running with Girls
Time: 35:32
Distance: 4 miles
I got off work a little early again today so I decided to go look at an apartment above Mr. Robert's Furniture on Main St. I one day aspire to be Mr. Robert because he owns a number of low priced apartments and houses in Norman. Basically, he's a slum lord and I respect that. Mr. Robert is Steve Calonkey's father who is a customer at OK Runner and often runs on the indoor track at night during the winter. Perhaps I will be living in one of his slums.
Anyway, I walked my way back to Campus Corner and enjoyed some coffee at Cafe Plaid before heading over to the track to meet Kristi for a jog. I put a call out to Owen on my walk and he was in a freezer at a liquor store buying booze for a Obama party. He told me I love running with girls and that's definitely true. There are people, like Tom, who claim running on rocky trails limits the speed at which one can run and therefore they won't get injured. However, the real reason why Tom runs solo on trails is because he's a loser and writes a terrible blog. I would rather run with people, have some good laughs and run slow, which makes girls good easy run training partners.
Kristi and I ran around campus south of Lindsey near the Lloyd Noble Center. I was telling her about the traffic last night and she informed me that it was actually the women who were playing. I believe the OU women are ranked #7 in the pre-season poll which means they should be pretty good this year. In fact, OU beat Western 132-36 last night. 132-36!!! Are you kidding me? That's a W by nearly 100 points.

Make 'em Hurt
Time: 83:07
Distance: 11.67
Pace: 7:07
I waited most of the day before heading out on a run to Kristi's new place which would be Coleman's old place. They spent most of the morning moving stuff from her old apartment to the McKinley St. house. I spent most of the morning watching Haile G set a new world record in the marathon. If you have time to watch it definitely do so, it's ridiculous to see a guy go through 10k in 29:09 and still have 20 miles to run. There is a cool article that breaks down his splits and gives what was a live analysis of the leader's progress throughout the race.
Our run was much slower than 14:40 5k pace, but it was still good. The three of us ran together on grass loop for about 3+ miles before Kristi had to stop and purge her Red Robin lunch that was mistakenly eaten hours earlier. Coleman and I continued on back to the house and we stretched for a bit before them two headed to a movie.
I continued back out on Lindsey and spotted a dude running at a fairly good clip about 100m in front of me. I picked up the pace and caught him by Lindsey and Elm. His name is Andres Gonzalez and he was trying to get in 85 minutes of running. I found out that he is one of the walk-ons for the OU cross country team that Coach Martin Smith needed to fill the roster. Coincidently Andres also lives at Campus Lodge and last year he ran for OCU. He was excited about getting to race the OSU Jamboree this weekend which is going to be a sick race with Ryan Vail and German Fernandez up front. Anyway, we wound our way back along Pickard where we crossed the path of two dudes that looked to be fit and true distance runners but I had never seen either one before and I was surprised because if you can run sub-7 minute pace and you live in Norman, I'll probably know your name. As we were running along Ponca, Andres starting feeling terrible and told me that he was going to stop and puke. I continued on my home proud that I had made two runners puke on the same run. I guess I'm not in that bad of shape after all.

Boomer! Sooner!
I was working at the store today when a customer who has season tickets overheard that I was going to be tailgating with friends near the stadium. After he left the store OK Runner received a phone call and Mr. Johnson informed me that he had an extra ticket to the game because his son is in the Pride of Oklahoma and gets in for free. He invited me to the game and on his way to the stadium he dropped the ticket off. Sweet!
Normally I wouldn't be too inclined to go sit with a family I barely know when I could watch the game with the 30,000 people outside the stadium on a big screen drinking all the tallboys I could handle and watch the other games on television including #3 Georgia vs #8 Alabama. (I mean I do need to get into beer miling shape). However, I didn't want to offend the customer and, besides, I had given Meagan 10:1 odds on the game straight up. She was willing to bet $5 which meant I was putting up $50 and if I was going to lose, I might as well be witness to the carnage.
I was right outside of the stadium when OU first scored and I could hear 85,000 fans cheering excitedly. The Sooners were up 7-0 only minutes into the game. However, it was soon followed by 85,000 boos as the play was called back. Only a few moments later the 85,000 fans were back on their feet when Sam Bradford hooked up with Manny Johnson for a long passing score. I quickly stashed my belongings under the track bleachers and was ready to enter the stadium.
As an athlete of a big school you are granted the privilege of sitting right behind the band, nearly on top of the field. I knew this was going to be quite different as I trekked up and up and up to section 232. It was hot, I was sweaty and now I was going to have to sit with people I didn't know in the fucking nosebleeds. I had to keep telling myself that the $63 ticket was free. As I took my seat was a little shocked at how little the players looked, but then I discovered that sitting on the south 30 yd line I nearly had a "tv" angle of the field. From our vantage point you could really see the plays develop, players getting open in the backfield, the holes open up in the line and it wasn't that bad.
Not so bad from up here.Since I need to wrap this up, I will only say that I am now $5 richer and Meagan is $5 poorer. OU won 35-10. The game was great and the rest of the night was fun too as it was Coleman's 24th birthday. The night was given an extra boost since Alabama beat Georgia 41-30 which ensured OU being ranked #1 come Monday. A small group of us (Scotty D., Coleman, Kristi, Spenis and Rook) ended up at on the Corner to celebrate. The first four of us started at Brother's and then were convinced to join the other two at Joe's Taverna. Good times all around.

After the first quarter the rout was on and the Sooners were on top of the horny frogs 21-3. OU had racked up 222 yards of total offense despite not being able to run the ball. The fans in our section were generally older and more reserved but they knew their football stats. I sat a few seats down from a woman who knew all of the top 25 teams and she knew TCU had the best ranked rush defense in the nation. The second quarter was rather uneventful until the Sooners took over with about 2 minutes to play before half and Sam Bradford, again, passed long to Manny Johnson for another score.

12/7 to 12/13
Time: 0 minutes
Distance: 0 miles
A few days ago Tom and I decided not to run the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon and opted to take some time off instead. I have been able to focus on school work and let my body fully rest for the first time since late June. The few runs that I have done were nice knowing that I didn't have a workout in a few days and needed to be rested. I was just able to enjoy the run.
I thought about starting up the training on 12/10 b/c most of my work was already completed. However, when I got up I found out that Campus Lodge was without electricity. Not only were we without electricity but most of the state was too. There was no way I was going to put in some time on the feet, come back and sit around in dirty running clothes without the ability to take a hot shower. I was able to hang out at campus, Kristi's and Jilane's for a few days before leaving for Cali. On Weds. night when I went by the Lodge to pick up my clothes, the apartment smelled like Marijuana, was probably 40 degrees and darker than most caves. After grabbing a random assortment of apparel I was off to Jilane's to pack and go out for the last time of the running break.
Now that I'm back in Cali I have started running again. Slowly but surely getting back into things. The break was nice. But, not feeling useless is nicer. Also, not having to run in ice storms where power lines are snapped by falling branches is pretty nice too.
