I traveled to NYC this morning for a meeting in Brooklyn. It left me free to visit stores the rest of the day in Manhattan and join up with Jay Holder for a run to his massage therapist in Brooklyn. We met on 21st St. and ran down the West Side Highway to the Manhattan Bridge. The pace was solid and caught up on training, racing and the upcoming track meets. Jay's training for the Boston Marathon is going really well and it will be exciting to watch him race in April.
I didn't feel too spectacular at any point of the run due to the early alarm clock and last night's workout. I was more exhausted from a long day than from the workout. I was glad to have company for the run as I would have likely run just a fraction of what we did.

Central Park Group Long Run
Time: 117:53
Distance: 28.31 km
Pace: 4:09/km
Map
We used Columbus Circle as the meeting point for this long run and had at least 15 people show up. It just so happened that Meagan and I were the connecting points of most people in the group. We were running pretty easy for the first 40 minutes and were just about to head up the first of the Harlem Hills when David Nightingale and I hit the front. With just a little injection of pace the group splintered into men and women.
The guys continued on and the pace gradually quickened, but never got out of control. It was great running with Jerry, Jay and some members of the Urban Athletics team through the park. Eventually the group got smaller as guys returned home or ran off to work. Jerry and I made a few smaller inner loops to fill the time before he took the train back to Queens and I continued back to the hotel.
My run was probably just over two hours and closer to 30 km, but I didn't time the section from the hotel to park.

Paragon Sports Run Group
Time: none
Distance: none
This morning Meagan and I headed over to Paragon Sports which is a
NYC institution for sporting equipment. If you're ever in New York and find
yourself near Union Square, stop in to check it out. We were on hand to chat
with their run group training for 13.1 NYC and raffle off some goodies.
The weather was perfect and the crowd was enthusiastic in
anticipation for a great run along the West Side Hwy. I was bummed to not be
running with everyone. Instead I walked over to Starbucks and slurped the black
stuff, walked through the farmers' market and chatted with people in Paragon.
Meagan got to run with Jay Holder who was finishing up a 22 mile run. At least
someone from Karhu can represent.

NYC Marathon Viewing
Time: 106:31
Distance: 23.84k
Pace: 4:28
Map
This morning Meagan and I met up with Jay Holder in Chelsea as he coincidentally lives a block from where we were staying in New York. Big city, small world. The three of us continued to the West Side bike path and picked up our friend Heidi who runs for NYAC. Jay had mapped out a brilliant course that would take us across the Manhattan Bridge and into Brooklyn to catch the marathoners at mile 8. The four of us ran and chatted while taking in the sights of the Statue of Liberty, construction of the new World Trade Center, and Ellis Island. We saw the Verrazano Bridge off in the distance where some 47,000 runners were about to embark on a 26.2 mile journey through the five boroughs.
I was feeling good throughout the run and at times wanted to pick up the pace, but relaxed to have the company of everyone. A couple of times people asked if we were running the marathon this morning and we frantically asked if we were going the right way or if this was the way to the Verrazano Bridge. I don't think they got the joke. We eventually arrived in Brooklyn and ran past the 8 mile mark with about 30 minutes to run before the lead women would be coming by. We had just enough time to venture up into Prospect Park (the one Olmstead said he got right according to Jay) and then return to the course.
Mary Keitany came scorching through the turn with a chase pack of a few Kenyans and Ethiopians. Our good friend Kim Smith was running a tactically smart race a couple of minutes back and would go on to finish 5th overall. We saw Sarah Porter who just outkicked Meagan a couple of years ago at DII Nationals in the 10k, Camille Herron from Oklahoma and a number of NYAC girls that Heidi runs with. We waited about 15 minutes and then the lead men flew by with Meb in the lead pack of Africans.
The one big observation I made was the contrasting styles of the lead men versus lead women. The women had all sorts of inefficiencies in their stride with choppy gaits, weird arm carries, titled heads, grimmaced faces and tense shoulders. There were so many different strides that it was a clinic in what not to look like. I couldn't understand how so many of them were running that fast! The men, in contrast, were virtually flawless in all those regards. They all looked similarly comfortable running 4:50 pace whether it was or wasn't.
Since I'm writing this a week later, I won't reflect too much on the fact that the top 3 men all broke the existing course record and Geoffrey Mutai claimed the victory in 2:05:06. Truly astounding. I tweeted, Facebook posted, or blogged about Mutai's form after the Boston Marathon and there is no wonder he is arguably the best marathoner on the planet. He becomes the first ever to win and break the course records at Boston and New York in the same year. Think about that in this day and age of elite marathoning. He lowered both course records, not by seconds, but multiple minutes. Does it make you want to hang up the shoes or get out there for a run?

Urban Athletics Workout in NYC
Time: 56:15
Distance: 11.48k
W/u: 19:18 for 4k
W/o: 6 x 600m with 3:00 rest
C/d: 15:23 for 3.03k
Yesterday I had a visit with Urban Athletics owner Jerry Macari at their Downtown location. I told him that a friend from Charlotte had recently moved to NYC and joined his store's team. Jerry invited me out to the team's workout the next night and that I should coordinate with Jason (hearing Jay called Jason is weird to me). I did just that as the workout was sent to Jay via email on Tuesday morning with the time and place. I had originally planned to head back to Pleasantville early in the day, but I just couldn't pass up an opportunity like this. I was even invited to eat dinner with Jay, Lauren and the Seavers after the workout, but that would just have been too much fun for one night. Next time.
I hung out at Urban Athletic's Uptown location for about 30 minutes prior to the workout. I was seriously second guessing if I should jump in as I really haven't done anything remotely like quick 600s in months. Plus, I had run with Ozzie and Neely early this morning and walked 40 blocks earlier in the day under the refusal of using the Subway for a 2 stop trip. Big mistake.
By the time Jay had arrived, I was mentally ready to put in work and it went a little something like this...
Splits:
1:46.7 (2:15), 1:44.9 (2:13), 1:44.8 (2:16), 1:46.2 (2:11), 1:44.9 (2:14), 1:46.0
21:44 for 4.45k total
Not totally impressive, but not terrible either. I never felt great and nearly started dry heaving after the fourth one. It was also a bit disheartening to watch two guys absolutely torch me on all of the intervals. However, it was fun being out in Central Park with a buddy from Charlotte running a workout and being cheered on by a store owner. Maybe this butt kicking is what I needed to get my training back on track.

McAlpine Buddies
Time: 88:44
Distance: ~12 miles
I returned back to Charlotte just in time to partake in the final moments of the Inside-Out Sports customer appreciation day. Those moments turned into minutes and hours which soon turned into flip cup and keg stands. It was a great time as we all worked hard to kick the Old Mecklenburg Brewery keg. I would post pictures but some others are trying to get into med school, another is a lawyer, and one coaches for a local high school. That's as specific as I'll get. Needless to say it was a great time and made for a slow start to the morning.
I was a little late arriving to Old Bell but I wasn't feeling too bad when I met up with a group of Megan Hovis, Caitlin, John Compton, Jay, Alex and Will around the 400 meter mark. We ran up into the trails near Boyce and did some loops out by the Footlocker course. I started feeling decent about 40 minutes into the run and was able complete a fairly solid end to the weekend.

No Warmer, Same Outfit
Time: 71:18
Distance: ~9.5 miles
This evening I wore the same outfit as I did this morning. Gross, I know. I made sure to change my shorts and tights, but the shirt, jacket and gloves were all the same. Summer running isn't fun either, but at least the laundry basket isn't always full.
I met up with Caitlin over at her pad to start the run. We ran over to Morehead Ave. where we picked up Mr. Holder and then continued into Dilworth. The streets were dark, but that was all going to change for part two of my run.
Caitlin had to be home after only 5 miles because she's taking DWTS lessons. Meagan, back from her travels in Atlanta, was dressed and ready to go. I opened my sweet new early Christmas gift from Caitlin and situated it atop my head. It's a Petzl headlamp that will allow me to illuminate the streets and navigate them safely.
Meagan and I ran about 30 minutes before calling a night.

Thunder Road Course Preview
Time: 92:11
Distance: ~13
Last night while supporting Matt in his latest endeavor, Jay Holder told me that a big group was departing from the Dowd YMCA at 7:00 am. I was torn because I also wanted to run with Caitlin's group from McAlpine at 9:00. Why not do both?
I met up with Jay, Paul, Aaron, Billy, Spada, Jason Martin, Leonard Hilliard, B-Mac, Nathan and many more for a tour of the first half of the Thunder Road Marathon course. I had forgotten just how hilly the first part was. Last year I must have blacked out or purposely forgotten the tough parts of the race. The opening 13 miles are definitely rolling with no one section being particularly tough, it's just that very little is flat. It was a great group to run with and the conversations were great. The pace began to pick up around 9 and we held a solid clip until the very end.
Once back at the Dowd I passed out a bunch of Nuun water bottles and some tablets to share. I had a box of 50 bottles in my car that has slowly whittled down to friends and accounts. Today was the day that I gave away the last bottle. Yes! Now I just have to get rid of the other 50 bottle box in my storage unit. Yikes. Who out there likes Nuun?
I stood around for about 5 minutes and then made the decision to hurry over to McAlpine. There was another group to run with...

Double with Jay & Caitlin
Time: 64:48
Distance: ~8.8 miles
I got word that Caitlin and Jay were running after work so I decided to join up with them. Jay who now has an official time and place at the Richmond Marathon is still doing mostly recovery runs and Caitlin is getting ready for Club XC. We met up along Moorehead Ave. and ran around Dilworth in the dark. I felt a hundred times better this evening than this morning. The back wasn't achy and I had a bit of pop in the legs. I finished up back at Jay's pad and called it an evening.

McAlpine Before NYC Marathon
Time: 97:57
Distance: ~14 miles
Meagan and I were a little late getting out the door this morning as I had to deal with some internet shenanigans. We arrived to Old Bell a few minutes late and just missed the group of Charlotte Running Club members. Instead of playing catch up, we ran comfortably to the Footlocker Course while keeping an eye out for the crew. We spotted them as we approached the hairpin and thought if we excluded the hill we might be able to catch them. However, when we got out to the pond they were nowhere in sight. We finished up the back section of the course and then made a pit-stop at the conveniently located bathrooms near the start of the course.
The Richmond Marathon trio of Jay, Aaron and Paul came trotting our direction so we continued back to Old Bell. It was a good chat about the soon to be run NYC Marathon during the two miles back to the parking lot. I think everyone was looking forward to tracking Spada, watching Geb and seeing how Shalane would do in her debut. I grabbed a quick drink at the lot before heading back out with Meagan for some more miles.
We ran the same loop, but tossed in the hill for good measure. We got back to the parking lot for the second time having run over a minute faster with the added distance. I had planned on running back to the house, but when I realized that the marathon was about to start in 10 minutes I bagged that idea. We hopped in the car and hurried home so that I could pull up all the forums, twitter, and live feeds to enable proper running nerd enthusiasm. I even downloaded an iPhone app that allowed me to track the top runners in real time. Somehow my former teammate at Brown, Nick Neely, made the app which meant I could see how much distance he had remaining and could calculate pace. It would have cost me $3.99 to track Spada so unfortunately he didn't make the cut.
Here is a short list of how those I know did at NYC:
Mark Olivier - 2:28:55 (Ran at Columbia)
Kim Smith - 2:29:28 (NZ legend and friend)
Nick Neely - 2:30:46 (Former college teammate)
Alissa McKaig - 2:37:29 (Runs at Zap)
Janeatte Faber - 2:39:41 (Married to volunteer coach when at Brown)
Sally Meyerhoff - 2:41:00 (Sister visited Queens last winter)
Jonathon Pillow - 2:42:43 (Used to race Jonathon in OK)
Stephen Spada - 2:48:17 (Representing the CRC)
Alexandra Brown - 3:04:39 (Ran at Brown)
Val Matena - 3:09:45 (Used to live in Clt)
Congrats to all those who ran. Sorry not to mention others. Good effort by Meb and Ritz. Sorry to see Geb go.

(Un)Common Market Run
Time: 62:04
Distance: ~8 miles
After cooling down with Meagan from her workout and dropping her off back home, I drove over to Common Market for the Meetup Group run. I was interested in the running comradery and post-run pints, while she wanted to nerd out at a book club meeting.
I joined up with Tyler and Jay a little early so we could run the loop once prior to running it with the big group. Somehow the three of us managed to miss a turn and we ended up across The Plaza. We still managed to get back in time to see all the Halloween costumes. Nobody told us about the costume party so we stood off to the side and looked at the wallflowers (not that any of us would have worn a costume).
The group set off shortly after 6:30 pm and I ran in the middle of the pack. I ran up on Batman (Allen Strickland) a few minutes into the run and we steadily picked people off. By the time we finished the pace was quite honest and I was ready to call it a day. I believe Bruce Wayne had a few of those miles clocked at just over 7:00 (BQ pace) too. Back at Common Market, Kati, Tyler and I each purchased a drink of our choice and imbibed while chatting about religion and politics. We really did. Prior to leaving Kati snapped a pic of me feeding her Yoda backpack which was part of her Jedi costume. If you think Yoda talks funny in the movies, you should hear him after a couple pints. I couldn't understand a damn thing.

Accurate Long Run?
Time: 105:45
Distance: 14.01
Pace: 7:33
Map
After a really fun evening at Jay's house last night a good sized group of Charlotte Running Club members were out for some long easy miles. I got to the parking lot a few minutes late and guess correctly on where to find the group. I wasn't really tired or sore from yesterday's racing, but didn't have much direction on how much to run. I jogged along chatting with Aaron at the back of the pack for the first 20 or 30 minutes. I was content to sit back while the Hoviseseses (Hovii?) ran with some others up front. When the group started breaking off I found myself with Jay and Paul who were both running really long.
There wasn't too much to report from the run this morning other than the presence of Ms. Meagan Nedlo who is back from her first week of work. She's been up in Beverly and Boston, MA to be trained on Craft and Karhu. She also flew to Atlanta to help Fleet Feet John's Creek with packet pickup for the 13.1 Atlanta race. The best part was her foot being pain free for 4 miles for the first time in a month.

Evening Run in Two Parts
Time: 35:02
Distance: 4.49 miles
First Part: 23:29 for 3.01 miles
Second Park: 11:33 for 1.48 miles
Meagan and I showed up at Caitlin's door for my second run. However, there would only be cat and tv watching for Meagan this evening. We need that foot to feel better before running doubles after hill workouts. I, on the other hand, was putting in some miles with Red and Jay. We ran through Elizabeth before stopping at "Nothing But Noodles Field" in Independence Park. I stopped the watch and reset it because I thought we were going to do drills. Only Jay pranced around the park as Caitlin and I ran loops like the middle school team that was out there.
After the run we enjoyed an impromptu dinner back at Caitlin's while John cooked a roast. Who cooks a roast on a Tuesday night at 8:00 pm? Johnny C does.

Girl Talk
Time: 64:49
Distance: 8.59 miles
Pace: 7:33
Map
I agreed to run with Meagan at 6:00 am for whatever reason which means it's still pretty dark out. We tried not to disturb my boss who was sleeping on the couch on our way out. That's how Team TGA rolls!
The run was a standard loop through Freedom Park where we met Alice, Jay, and Caitlin. The group of us turned on Queens Road West where we spotted the morning Charlotte Running Club crew that had met at the Dowd YMCA. Who would have guessed, but AJ was leading the charge up the hill. The girls yelled for Danielle to come join us and she did. For whatever reason this made Alice and Jay feel bad for not running with the other group and so they left. So we got Danielle and they took Jay and Alice. Sounds like a fair trade to me.
I was content to run behind the ladies and admire the view. The view of Queens University and all of the big homes of course. We parted way as we turned back into Freedom Park. Meagan and I called it a day with just over an hour's worth of running.
The rest of the morning was spent hassling Paul, drinking coffee and eating flapjacks. We all eventually got on with our days. Meagan working at Run For Your Life and Paul and I making deals all around town.

Mullet Miles
Time: 31:02
Distance: 4.14 miles
Pace: 7:30

I guess I didn't get in enough miles this morning because I agreed to meet up with Jay, Caitlin and Matt Jaskot for a run from Run For Your Life. It felt good to get the legs moving this late afternoon. I was surprised that I didn't feel too exhausted from running 15:18 at Blue Points. The best part of the run was Mr. Jaskot's filthy mullet.

Blue Points 5k Recap
Time: 72:24
Distance: 11.27 miles
Race: 15:18, 1st
W/u: 22:54 for 3.02 miles
Meagan's Workout: 18:55 for 3.14 miles (6:06, 6:15, 5:49)
C/d: 15:17 for 2.01 miles
I thought today might have been the morning for a sub-15 effort, but in the end I came up well short.
My day started off dark and early with a cup of coffee and some internet browsing. I was out the door with Meagan around 6:00 am because I knew parking might be an issue. We found a spot at the Dowd YMCA and walked the half mile to the Bank of America Stadium. There weren't too many people in attendance yet which made registering and picking up my chip pretty easy. Dr. Greenapple has been kind enough to cover my entry fees for the remainder of the Grand Prix Series. He's been a great (Dr. Duffy and Dr. Clay too) contact since moving to Charlotte and really helped Meagan stay healthy this spring during track.
I warmed up a full 3 miles on the race course. I wanted to see just how bad the final mile was going to be. All week I heard about the climb past the Y. Jogging the hill didn't intimidate me too much and given the cooler temps I had thoughts of running fast. The humidity was still off the charts and the oh so lovely dew point hovered in the low 70s.
Race time was a couple of minutes after the wheelchairs and babyjogging crew were released. I was told that Rocky Falcone would be one to go out hard and he didn't disappoint. I was also sizing up a couple of college kids that made an appearance in Charlotte. I was out fast, but Rocky was out even faster. He charged around the first turn and continued to up the pace. I followed about 10 meters behind and didn't completely close the gap until about 800 meters. We ran together to about 1,000-1200 meters and then I gained a bit of an advantage.
I knew the mile split would be quick and saw the clock tick off 4:43 or so. The downhill continued onto Kenilworth and I tried to maintain my momentum. I know the pace slowed going up to Morehead where I finally passed the lead babyjogger. He would definitely give Mike Beigay a run for his money as he finished in 17:45. I didn't catch the lead wheelchair until just before the two mile mark which I crossed in 9:40-9:41 (4:58 split). He also came back on me just before the final climb up to the Dowd YMCA.
After hitting the split for two miles I was still convinced I could go under 15:00. With a good final mile I'd have things locked up. Wrong. I started to struggle about a quarter mile beyond McDowell. I had a bad 3 minute stretch of running. It wasn't really a loss of focus, but a loss of strength. I just couldn't power my way up the hill and maintain pace. I took a good long look back about 50 meters from the top of the hill and could see the neon green singlet of Matthew Elliot (Winthrop grad with 3:43 1500m credentials). I felt the crosshairs on my back and I knew that the downhill needed to be quick.
Cresting the hill I tried to get a response out of the legs but they were slow to react. I never really got rolling on the descent and crossed 3 miles in 14:43 (5:02 split). I had little motivation to sprint to the line since I looked over my should and saw things were locked up. I brought things home in 15:18 which means my final 200m was a dismal 35 seconds. I think Meagan closed faster than me.
I was pleased to get the win and a little disappointed I couldn't sniff 15:00 today. After the race Meagan had to run another loop as part of a workout. I tagged along and dragged her through the course. Our splits were 6:06 (weaved through finish line traffic), 6:15 and 5:49 (as fast as Meagan's final mile split during the race).
The prizes were decent as I received a signed Panthers mini-helmet. I can't really read the signature but I think it's Matt Moore's. If the Panthers do well this year that thing is going up on E-bay. I also received some sort of bag that Leonard Hilliard joked with me about wanting a prize. I politely passed along the bag and hope it's used well by him.
There were good performances turned in by Jay Holder, Alice Rogers, Paul Mainwaring and Mr. Spada. Big congrats to Billy Shue who cracked 17-flat for the first time ever.
My cool down didn't occur until much later as I couldn't find a ride back home so I walked about a mile over to Inside-Out Sports and stashed my bag. I then ran two miles to Run For Your Life where I waited for Meagan to arrive so that I could drive the rest of the way home.

Mallard Creek Long Run
Time: 107:35
Distance: 15.40 miles
Pace: 6:59
Map
I was out the door and up to the University area of Charlotte for a long run with a few other fellow Charlotte Running Club members. Billy Shue was playing host at the Mallard Creek Greenway. Others in attendance included Mike Beigay, Ben and Megan Hovis, Caitlin, Jay Holder and Michelle. When the run started, of course, I was several strides off the back even at the 8:00 minute clip the group was holding. About 600m the group turned around and returned to the parking lot because they had forgotten Justin Breland. Leave no man behind.
I had to play catch up early on after a quick pit stop which is why my second split was so fast. It was my first time exploring Mallard Creek and I conclude that it would be a great spot for marathon workouts. The bike path is well shaded, flat and provides enough distance to get in a proper run. The pace for most of the run was quite pedestrian. No one was complaining about it because it was hot and sticky out and most of us were tired from the 4 Miler the previous day. However, I had a hard time finding the right stride. The pace wasn't slow enough to have the "800 meter shuffle" (you know what I'm talking about if you've ever watched 800m runners on a long run. They have beautiful strides in workouts and crap strides during longer distances), but it wasn't fast enough to feel smooth. I was sort of bounding and wasting a lot of energy to slow down.
The pace started to pick up at the turn around and most of use became a bit more fluid. Since it was hot out I needed to get this run over with and so I started to pick up the pace. Billy came with me initially when the splits started seeing sub-7:00. I ultimately dropped him with a 6:27 split around mile 11. The final few miles all saw sub-6:00 because I was trying to get my total average down to 7:00 which I barely accomplished.
Splits:
8:07, 6:42, 7:54, 7:54, 7:55, 7:50, 7:28, 7:16,
6:58, 6:50, 6:27, 5:55, 5:59, 5:58, 5:45
I'm not sure how often I will make it up to Mallard Creek, but it will definitely be a consideration when I get back into marathon training.

Recovery Run with Queens, WF & SUNY Oswego
Time: 65:10
Distance: 9.01 miles
Pace: 7:14
Map
Meagan and I drove over to Caitlin and John's (fastest roommates in Charlotte) for a run from 7th St. Mr. Holder who was fresh off his trip to New York joined us as well. It was a good crew of has been collegiate athlete's still living in the glory days of road racing. We didn't have a particular route selected and just roamed around the Elizabeth area for a few miles. Eventually we made our way to Dilworth, but couldn't run along the creek path due to the massive rain storm this afternoon. Massive rain storms mean a ridiculous amount of humidity, but at this point we should be used to it.
John and Meagan turned back around 2.5 miles because they are sissies and can't handle a day above 15 miles. Jay, Caitlin and I decided to venture on through Freedom Park before finishing up with a few miles near the starting point. The conversation was great this afternoon, but you'll have to ask Jay about his run in with the bare runner.
This was a good last run with Caitlin, Meagan and Jay before heading to Cali. I hope John gets suckered into working out with me in the morning and taking me to the airport afterward.

Blazing Hot
Time: 55:34
Distance: 7.42 miles
Pace: 7:29
Map
It continues to be blazing hot here in Charlotte. Luckily, it looks like we will catch a bit of a break at the end of the week. However, it still means this evening's run was a hot one. Meagan and I drove over to Caitlin's house for some company on the run. Jay was also meeting us there so we had a nice group running through the mean streets of Charlotte. We toured Elizabeth, Myers Park and Freedom Park before ending back at Caitlin's. There was a bit of a breeze which kept us from completely melting.

Evening Stroll
Time: 60:36
Distance: 8.15 miles
Pace: 7:26
Map
I put in a lot of extra miles this evening after my 800m workout. If you're going to run 110 miles in a week, it's best to start out with a ton of minutes on Monday. The most notable thing about this run was the fact that Jay, Caitlin and I ran with a guy for over six miles and he was barefoot. I could write an entire post dedicated to the barefoot movement, but not right now. It was hot and I'm sure the pavement wasn't kind on his feet, but he kept up.
