Last night I had the task of driving down to Logan Airport just before the start of rush hour to pick up Matthew Busche. Never heard of him? Well, you will soon as he is currently the USA Cycling Pro Road Champion and is signed to team Nissan Trek which is sponsored by Craft. I didn't know much about Matthew prior to picking him up, but after a drive back in chaotic Boston traffic, we got to know one another pretty well. He's a great dude and was actually a 9:08 steeple chaser while at Luther College in Iowa, a small DIII school. I brought him to the office where he was soon introduced to everyone who makes Craft of Sweden happen in the US.
The night turned into something later than I had originally planned after having been awake at 5 AM. This morning, I wasn't feeling so hot, but I was on duty to lead a run through the Endicott College XC course that Matt would be attending. I arrived and let Matt borrow one of my running costumes as his luggage didn't arrive on time. The group was dressed and ready to go a little after 7:30 AM where we headed across the road and ventured into the woods. The cross-country course was nothing more than a small trail that didn't really go anywhere pleasant. We kept losing the trail and coming to deadends which made for a choppy jaunt.
The run simply came to an end a little after 30 minute which is about what others were looking to do. When everyone went inside to clean up for the last day of meetings, Matt and I headed off to find some more distance. The neighborhoods provided traffic free running and wide shoulders for us to talk about both running and cycling. He's going to be very good at cycling, but I think he is a runner at heart the way he knows the sport and competed in college. I'll be excited to follow his season on the pro tour and hope to stay in touch.
